First Dive Into the Deep
September 6th, 2025 – Tokyo
The humidity clings to the air today, thick with the promise of rain. From my small apartment near the bay, I can hear the distant murmur of the city, but my mind is already underwater—somewhere between coral reefs and the quiet hum of ocean currents.
This is my first entry, the beginning of something I’ve been meaning to do for years. Writing has never come naturally to me—I’d rather be knee-deep in research or floating in the Pacific, counting fish populations—but lately, I’ve felt the need to document more than just data. The ocean is changing faster than we can study it, and perhaps words can bridge the gap between science and the people who need to hear it.
Right now, I’m preparing for a dive next week off the coast of Okinawa, studying the effects of rising temperatures on local reef systems. The numbers are alarming, but I try to focus on the small victories—the resilient species, the communities adapting, the young researchers who still believe in solutions.
I don’t know where this blog will take me, but if it helps even one person see the ocean the way I do—as a living, breathing world worth protecting—then it’s worth the effort.
More soon. Maybe with fewer nerves and more fish anecdotes.
