Embracing the Spotlight: My First Fashion Competition Experience

Mandy

Hey, fashion fam! It's your girl Mandy, checking in from a foggy LA morning. The city's wrapped in a cool 58°F (14°C) embrace, and I'm cozied up with a steaming cup of espresso, letting its warmth seep into my bones.

So, guess what? I did a thing. I entered my first-ever fashion design competition! After all the soul-searching and embracing vulnerability in my designs, I felt it was time to put myself out there and see how my work resonates beyond the classroom.

The competition is the "Young Talent of Tomorrow Design Competition," hosted by the Graduate Fashion Foundation and supported by PVH. The theme is "Imagining Tomorrow," challenging us to design a full outfit that envisions the future of fashion.

I won't lie; the process was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Drawing inspiration from my recent explorations of exposed seams and raw edges, I aimed to create a piece that embodies the beauty of imperfection and authenticity. I envisioned a garment that not only reflects my personal growth but also speaks to a future where fashion celebrates individuality and raw expression.

Submitting my design felt like baring my soul to the world. But isn't that what art is all about? Sharing a piece of yourself and hoping it resonates with others. Whether I win or not, this experience has been a monumental step in my journey as a designer. It's taught me to embrace the spotlight, take risks, and trust in my creative vision.

To all my fellow aspiring designers out there: don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Competitions like these are more than just accolades; they're opportunities for growth, learning, and self-discovery. So, take the leap—you might just surprise yourself.

With love and a touch of espresso,

Mandy
